I have been told that the alternative throat Bb fingering that I use on my R-13(i.e., A key the 2nd from top of the 4 keys on the side of the upper joint) will not work (ie. be in tune) on Selmers, Leblancs, & Yamahas?
Is this so?

I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. There is another alternate fingering you might want to try. Play the A and register keys as normal. But add your left middle and ring fingers and cover up the holes. This works best on sustained passages.

The main purpose of the 2nd side key is for doing exactly that, changing an A into a Bflat. This is normally for trilling but can also be used for long B flat notes.

Works better than the standard Bb on almost any clarinet ever made. The makers don't have compromise the hole size and position. The alternate is commonly used in slow passages and of course trilling.
Whoever told you this either didn't know what they were talking about or has some kind of "hidden agenda" to promote R-13s.

The only thing that doesn't work well on the more expensive Selmer and Leblanc clarinet's (the ones with the larger bore), is using a german system mouthpiece on them. The throath tones get awfully out of tune for some unknown reason. (I've tried several german and frensh mouthpieces on Selmer signature, Leblanc concerto and Leblanc Opus. The frensh all work perfectly but all german make them out of tune. The german mouthpieces do work ok on Buffet RC, E-13, B-10 and an Leblanc sonata. I haven't had the opportunity to trie this phenomenom on other instruments
