 Clarinet Duet with Band
Author: MTitus
Date:   2004-11-05 21:25

My friend and I for our senior concerto want to play a Clarinet Duet with the band. I have yet to find any peices written for two clarinets and band. Any ideas where to look and/or what good peices are out there?

There is a published concert band adaptation of Mendelssohn Concertpieces #1 floating around; don't recall the ISBN or if still in print. v/r Ken

Check to see if the Krommer Concertos for 2 clarinets are arranged for band. #1 is Op. 35 in E flat Major; #2 is Op. 91 in E flat Major again.

Kalman Berkes has them recorded on the Naxos label.

Hope this helps!

The Christensens (Don and Cynthia) performed it with the Navy Band in the 1992 Cincinatti Clar fest if I recall.

Try them - they are listed on the Klarinet teachers page if I recall.

I performed the Concertpiece No. 2 by Mendelsohn, Opus 114 for two clarinets with band about 15 years ago. It is much fun. I assume it is still available in band libraries.

By the way, I was just at a performance when Alexander Fiterstein performed it. All I can say is WOW !

you may want to look into the RONDO CONCERTANTE for 2 solo clarinets and band by BURNET TUTHILL, Op. 44.

I recently performed it and loved doing so. Nice 2 pg piece, Allegro tempo.

Copyrighted 1963, Summy-Birchard Company and is readily available.
If you are serious about performing it, perhaps our ensembles can swap loaner musical scores. I'm president of my group and due to purchase costs , have encouraged swapping/loaning of scores.

I would like to second the vote to "Rondo Concertante". Great writting for both clarinets and fun for the audience to listen to. I've enjoyed playing it a couple of times, once, while an underclassman, with the Univeristy of Wisconsin Concert Band on tour, and later, long after graduation, with our local Madison Municipal Band. Always well recieved, and its challenging enough to be an interesting play.

(at least, at lot better than "Two Little Bull Finchs"--anyone remember that one??)

Go to jwpepper.com and search for "Flower Duet", a pretty selection that can be a clarinet duet. Also "Clarinet Candy" by Leroy Anderson is always a fun choice.

Hi,

A little tougher piece is the Ponchielli's Il Convegno. Nice band acompaniment but lots of really tough finerging things for the soloists. I've got a recording of Ken Kolb, a BB poster from time-to-time, doing this with the Heritage of America Band from Langley AFB.

Some really outstanding playing. I'm dilligently working my way through the piece but Ken and Amy Ashmore's playing with the Langley group is a true benchmark.

I was also going to suggest Il Convegno. Fantastic piece (not that I can play it, but I've heard it done extremely well with band!)
