I've always thought of the Eb clarinet as a piccolo clarinet. Yesterday I saw that music123 was selling the Eb clarinet as a soprano clarinet. The 'other' clarinet board (COTW) calls it a Sopranino.
What is it officially called? Thank you for your time.

I sometimes call the Eb clarinet many different names, but I believe it to be properly known as the "sopranino" of the clarinet family. The piccolo is the somewhat more problamatic--and higher pitched--Ab clarinet. Beyond those, only dog whistles...............

"sopranino", full stop. This chaos of denominations of clarinets, grown from tradition (what´s horn-like with the the "bassethorn"?!), takes an incredibly long time to overcome.

If saxophone naming practice can be cited, then the infamous "eefer" ( BTW, I just got one!) would be a "sopranino". See Selmer's web pages.

Another expert, whom I really respect, weighs in:
PaulWh: Ab = sopranino. Eb, D, C, Bb, A = sopranos.
If there were a high Bb horn above the Ab, you could call it either a piccolo, sopranino, or sopranissimo. (Soprillo is a tradename.)
Since my wife, the clarinet player agrees with Paul, soprano it is. :o)

Get this: I ordered a mp for my Soprano sax from WW&BW. When it arrived it was too small to fit any soprano sax. In their back and forth they maintained that mfgr. didn't even make any mp smaller than for a soprano sax. They were wrong. Caution: Don't ever order a sax mp as simply "Sop"....as there are soprano,sopranino and soprillo. What's this got to do with eefers!!

PaulW is exctly right. The Eb is the highest "soprano" clainet. and the Ab is a sopranino, although i have never had a call to play one and i'm not at all cetain it would be an enjoyable experience... can you even begin to imaine the intonaiton nightmare?
