I know I should search first, but has anyone heard of, have info on, a Bb cl mp, labelled Brilhart, Milo W Hovey B3 [facing?]. ?? Its "inherited" , well warn, so the naming may be inaccurate. TKS, Don

I believe it's NILO Hovey. He was a well-known teacher, author of method books, and, I think, clarinetist. It would not surprise me that Brilhart made a mouthpiece to his specs.

TKS, Dan 1937 [Year??, [like my birth 19 ?], a good one for me, HS grad, played in the MI St band before entering there-to], with a bit of search, found a bit of info, prob enough!, contributed by John G and Hank L in 2003. GBK, your ref to "mouthpiece heaven" didnt "show" will ck further. Nilo Hovey, clist, author-composer, Selmer associate 50-60, when [I guess] Sel ?acquired? Brilhart, prob made the mp. Will play mine, if as good as J G reported will post. Happy to read more contribs. Don

I own three Brillhart Nilo Hovey mouthpices, two of which are marked B3. The third one is not currently in my posession but I recall that it is marked "Symphonic". These mouthpieces are free-blowing, flexible pieces as I recall but I haven't really given any of them a good workout in a performane setting. Bill G

TKS,Bill G, I'm glad to know the B3 facing has at least some popularity. However mine no longer is [quite that] !! On close inspection , my "inherited" one had a very small chip-mark in the tip [careless stucent ?]. So gathering my courage, recalling BB discussions and Pro watching, I flattened the table a bit, then opened the curve to partially "erase" the mark [on very fine emery paper], trying it. It seems to be much the same, as you say, free-blowing and flexible, possibly needing a slightly softer reed. Plan today to play it on a well-known cl, to see, checking pitch by "play along" with FM classics, as a break from watching election returns and paying bills !! If "quite-to very" good, will consider sending it to Dave S for at least measurement, which is beyond me !! Don

Nilo Hovey was a clarinet student of Domenico DeCaprio at Northwestern University and he later became education director for Selmer, Inc. The mouthpieces with his name are often found on Selmer products such as Bundy and the Selmer Signet.
