Hey guys
I can't stand the heat! Australia is heading very quickly toward summer at the moment and my bedroom is on 2nd floor, facing west with 2 windows and nothing to obstruct the afternoon sun. It gets VERY hot up here.
Anyway, over summer, the heat seriously reduces my practise time, if I even can be bothered doing ANY on a 40oC day.
Any tips re: keeping cool, getting myself to do some work in the hot days?

You could practice early in the day (if possible) when its cooler, take a cool shower before you practice, and practice for shorter segements several times a day. Is there a basement you could practice in?
Also, I would definately get some shades or curtains to hang up during the day. At night, keep the windows open (if you don't have an air conditioner this will let the cooler air in) and make sure to close the curtains when the sun comes up (or shortly after).
Those are my keeping cool ideas.

During my 15 year sojourn in Melbourne (I'm back "home" in Vancouver B.C.) I despised the heat so I can empathise. Outside blinds are very effective against the heat. They can be awnings or bamboo blinds. The bamboo blinds are much less costly and easier to install. And, being a keen cross counrty skiier, I am looking forward to winter here!!

All of the advice offered seems fairly obvious and commonsense to me and I wonder if they have not occurred to you anyway.
If blinds and airconditioners are not an option though, you could ask permission to practice in a church hall (if there are any still left these days) or may the local Scout hall would be keen to let you have a room in return for something - a service to the movement perhaps.
Don't know wheree you are in Oz exactly, but I can sympathise with those of us who struggle with 40 degree Melbourne days and 99% (it seems) Sydney humidity, although my experience of the American midwest and East coast in their summer leaves us for dead (or more accurately, during their long spells, probably leaves THEM for dead).

Bionaire makes a fan which is a vertical design. The vertical (looks like a tower) design doesn't "cut up" the sound like any other room fan does.
Doesn't affect the sound at all.
(I'm one "hot" dude - just ask Mark C., he can vouche for that one  )

I just went through an extensive housing search here in oppressively hot South Texas. Several homes I saw had what looked like Roman window shades -- sheer, one-piece pleated shades that could be drawn up and down like miniblinds. Every house that had them was very comfortable wherever there was direct sunlight hitting them. And they diffuse direct sunlight to cast a nice soft light throughout the room. Look into getting some for your place.

This is as warm as it normally gets in Finland, so we'll start here. People in Spain wear winter-coats and gloves. The Finns are out in the sun, getting a tan.

The French are trying in vain to start their central heating. Finns plant flowers in their gardens.

Italian cars won't start. Finns are cruising in convertibles.

Distilled water freezes. The water in our Vantaa river gets a little thicker.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! Will try some of the inexpensive ones first.
We've had a few cold days lately, so I'm gonna make sure my room is freezing, then keep it that way!
