 do it myself

Hi,

I am hoping that someone can direct me to a reasonably priced site (hopefully with free shipping) that sells cork for the joints of my clarinet, and other repair equipment. It seems like it should be a relatively easy thing to do, especially compared to rewiring my fender strat - take off old cork, glue on new cork, perhaps a bit of sanding to remove bits of glue and cork which remain. I just don't want to pay someone $100 to recork my $100 piece of junk. OR do I have it all wrong? anyway, if someone is going to tell me why I'm better off going to a shop then I'm more than willing to listen, just also please include a good site for supplies of this sort.

Thanks very much,

David

Sorry people. Sometimes I don't think and so I didn't need to ask, as I did above for assistance. I found exactly the site I was looking for - even with free shipping in the U.S. www.musicmedic.com if anyone was curious.

Goodbye,

Actually any shop charging $100 for recorking is overcharging. It's roughly $10 per cork.

Not around where we live, Dee ... $15-$25 is what a reasonable job costs (Royal Music et al.)

Even so a clarinet, excluding mouthpiece, has only 3 corks. So that's $45 to $75 for all three. However, it's my observation that if all three need replaced at the same time, the horn is probably far enough gone that it needs a significant overhaul not just corks.

That is pretty expensive. The price here is around 10$ per cork if I'm not mistaking, and that is by the best repairman in the country who is very good.

I paid $30.00 for my junker to be recorked. That included all key corks being replaced. I thought that was money well spent.

really? I called my local Sam Ash repair guy and he said it varies by instrument but he gave me a quote of 100 to 125 for student level, plastic instruments. So today I ordered a clarinet repair kit and will learn to do my own cork and pad work. I like not having to rely on anyone else to make my instruments work, except for structural damage - thankfully I haven't had to deal with that ...yet - which I leave to the "pros".

$100-125 is ludicrous, unless it includes replacing all the pads as well. Also, unless you know that they do it in-house and know that the repairperson does good work (there are stores in my area at each end of the spectrum), I wouldn't take my clarinet to a music store for repair, especially to a national chain.

I buy most of my pad and cork supplies from Ferree's. Nice folks, very reasonable prices.
