Hello,
I was wondering if anyone would comment on the tempo of the first movement of the Time Pieces (quarter=112). If you have performed this, is this the tempo you strived for? I remember listening to a recording of Mucznyski and Lurie (sorry about butchering the spelling) perform this piece and I don't remember the tempo being this quick but I could be wrong because it was awhile ago and unfortunately I do not have the recording at hand to listen to it again. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks

I think the 112 on the first movement works well. However, there is a faster central section marked 126 (I think - I'm coming up with this off the top of my head) and I think that tempo is a little bit on the quick side.

I preformed it on my junior recital last March, and took the first section around 100, and the middle section around 120. (oh, and you were close, its Muczynski)

Yes, I recall 1/4=112 is the mvt's opening as well as recap tempo. My observation is whatever tempo you settle on, and most comfortable with be sure to duplicate those "bookend tempos". And, remain consistent by proportionately increasing-decreasing the 1/4=126 mid-section tempo. However, still be cautious not to create too large a contrast between those tempos ... that is keep the underlying 1/8th note pulse reasonably close. You want one musically seamless mvt, not one sounding like two. Also, remember your accompanist is chopping some serious wood on this chart, don't let the tempos creep up too much. Muczynski is a piano player and instinctively writes participative, if not formidable piano parts.
And, I've been searching in vain for almost 20 years for that original Muczynski-Lurie recording. However, Chuck West (to the rescue) pressed a splendid version of the Time Pieces. I would definitely pick up a disc as a helpful reference. v/r Ken

Crystal Records has released the Mitchell Lurie recording of Time Pieces on CD737, "Mitchell Lurie, Clarinet." Amazon.com shows two copies in stock as well as some copies available from their affiliates. They also have sound excerpts at their site so you can get an idea of Lurie's tempo at the beginning of the first movement. Probably also available directly from Crystal.
Also on the CD are Halsey Stevens' Clarinet Concerto and Frederick Lesemann's Sonata for Clarinet and Percussion.
Best regards,
jnk
