Does anyone know the title of Cds featuring Sidney Bechet or Lester Young
on clarinet rather than their usual instruments?

The Count Basie "America's #1 Band" 4-CD collection has a great version of I Ain't Got Nobody with Lester Young on clarinet. He doubled on clarinet and tenor on a number of recordings with Basie in the 1938 and 39 timeframe.

I have a Sidney Bechet CD with him playing clarinet on several tracks. But, I can't find it at the moment. His earlier recordings often featured him doubling on clarinet and soprano. It shouldn't be a problem to find a CD with him on clarinet. He was as powerful on clarinet as he was on soprano.

Listening to Sidney and Lester on clarinet is one of life's great joys.

The eponymous Sidney Bechet CD I had on loan from the local library (and plan to buy) featured several clarinet tracks, and is part of the Ken Burns jazz collection. It was Columbia/Legacy # CK 61441.

In 1958, Young recorded album for Verve/Polygram/BMG entitled, "Laughing to Keep from Crying" - probably one of the saddest albums, given Prez's poor condition. He played clarinet.

His best work on clarinet were recorded in 1938 under the heading Kansas City Six - they were released on Commodore, and may be available on the Classics of Jazz label.

In 1938, Prez also played clarinet with Glen Hardmann (organ); these may also still be available on Classics of Jazz.

With Basie, his most well known clarinet solo is on "Blue and Sentimental" - also featuring a great Hershel Evans tenor sax solo.

As for Bechet - look for anything he did with Clarence Williams' Blue Five in 1924 - in addition to some great clarinet (and soprano sax) work, you'll be treated to some equally great trumpet playing by Louis Armstrong, as well as wonderful singing by Williams' wife Eva Taylor. Best titles: Cake Walkin' Babies, I'm a Little Black Bird, Mandy.

The Kansas City Six stuff is available from Verve, I believe. A few years ago, they released a full set complete with alternate takes.

Just as an aside, that solo on Blue and Sentimental is supposedly what led Commodore records to assemble and record those Basie guys as the Kansas City Six.
