 matching barrels with clarinets

Hi
I searched but couldn't find this. Does anyone know what is the bore of the R13 Prestige (I'm guessing its the same as the R13) or the Eaton International? In the WW&BW catalogue it says the Buffet Prestige is 0.574 and the Eaton International is 0.578. Recently someone told me the Buffet R13 is more than 0.580 so I'm not sure. Where on the clarinet does this measuring apply to? The top, the bottom, the middle?
I want to get new barrels but I want to make sure they will fit my clarinets.
Also does anyone have an idea how o contact Tom Ridenour? The contact page on his website is an error page, and I tried emaling to the order email but get no reply from there.
Thanks you.

Hi,

Several clarinets have a different dimension at the top of the upper joint and at the bottom. My R13 (.586 top and .575 bottom), L200 (.585 top and .576 bottom), and Series 9* (.594 top and .575 bottom) are like this while my Leblanc Dynamic 2 is .588 at both ends of the upper joint.

These measurements are approximate since I just spun a caliper in the bore but this measurement is probably "close enough for jazz."

I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by "fit your clarinet." I believe that you may be asking does the exit bore on the barrel match the entrance bore on the upper section. I believe Ken Shaw has commented on this situation; IMHO he is pretty much the guru on barrels on this BB. Do a search using barrel and Shaw and I think you may find useful information.

I notice no real sonic difference with a change in barrels (I do have Scott, Chadash, and Moening); but that could be just my ears. I use a different barrel only to tune the wide 12th and on hot days.

The person to ask for the Buffet measurements is Morrie Backun - he has a measuring tool which measures to the 1/10,000 inch hooked up to a Computer.

He measured my Prestige Bore and has it on file so that he can check in the future if and how much it changes.

I measure to 0.0001 inch....and it varies with which diameter (front to back, side to side) you choose....BUT. The exit bore of the barrel is often and even optimally somewhat smaller than the upper joint entry bore.

The mouthpiece to intake bore of the barrel has been commented upon before.

usual "I make em and sell em " disclaimer applies

The "Prestige" should simply be the addition of the alternate Eb lever. So therefore any bore deviation to any R13 you've measured should just be a manufacturing defect or result of a dull tool or something.

The Prestige is supposed to be the same bore size as the R-13. The main difference--aside from the extra eb/ab key--is that the wood is taken from the center of the grenadilla wood ring and from the oldest, most seasoned wood in their stock. This is supposed to produce a larger tone than the standard R-13.

I owned a Prestige for several years and was pleased with it.

Brenda thanks but the difference between the Prestige and regular R13 is really not the issue here. For what I asked the R13 and the Prestige are the same.

sfalexi I never said I measured my clarinet or any clarinet for that matter or that there is a difference between the Prestige and R13, so I'm not sure what you are trying to answer.

Anyway, I spoke with Tom Ridenour and he couldn't really say if his barrels match the Eaton clarinet so does anyone know?

Thanks.

Clarnibass,

Sorry. I must've misinterpretted this . . .

I thought you were unclear on the bore size and whether it differred from the R13.

Yes, I guess I misread the question as well, because I could have sworn it was about the bore size of the Prestige compared to the R-13. Of course, there were other things thrown into the paragraph. Discussions often drift a bit off center.
