Anthony McGill seen on Mr Rogers show

I was flipping channels and saw a Clarinetist and Flutist (VERY young) playing so I watched it through. It was Anthony McGill and his flutist brother playing on the Mr. Rogers show. Anthony was probably about 15 at the time (looked like it at least).

I think he was studying w/Combs at the time and though they played well, it wasn't mind blowing (like Julian Bliss is).

Was fun to watch though!!!!

I wonder just how much his improvement was due to Montanaro/Curtis and how much was just his own talent level and hard work. Would he be where he is now if he had gone to a lesser school/teacher, etc?

I'm guessing yes.

I think the improvment... or lack of improvement happens at different times for everyone. Some players like Julian Bliss, and Ricaro Morales before him, are exceptional unique talent. The majority of professional players are not or were not like that at an early age. I agree that training has a big part in how good a player gets to a degree. A great teacher can't teach a student to hear though, which is the most important aspect of learning music. McGill obviously has some great ears.
