 German Ballad help
Author: chuck

Can anyone conversant with German popular music, possibly a contributor from Germany, help me with identifying a what was--and probably still is--a popular ballad from the WWII era? Need name and composer of a tune that was identified briefly in English as "Come Back"--and I'm not at all certain that that is the complete title in English or in German. I believe it may have been used in the film "Das Boot". Thank you, Chuck

Wasn't that a film about a submarine??

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

As a former submariner (US, not German Navy) I was entranced by the movie Das Boot, to the point where I don't recall if there even WAS music in the film, much less WHAT music......and I usually pay close attention to the music in films I see. Sorry, no help.

You might want to listen to the different pieces on the soundtrack to see if any of the tracks are what you are looking for:

Glen: thanks for the referral to the "Das Boot" soundtrack--which, unfortunately, is of the Klaus Doldinger scoring. The small portion occurring in the latter stages of the film was of the German Captain, and one of his crew listening to a recording (during a lull in the action) which I think may be of a French song, Je Reviendrai de Loin, by Charles Aznavour. This would translate roughly to "I will come back after some time" and a German title might be somewhat comparable. For the record, is there a French speaking member of this board who might confirm? David: my condolences. Spent one eight hour period on one of the pig-boats (USS BALAO) as an indoctrination dive when I was doing a course of instruction at the ASW School in Key West back in the 60's. Surfaced at 1600 and couldn't wait to get topside with eyes streaming from diesel fumes. Hopefully, all your time was spent in the nukes. Chuck

Chuck,
Yes, nukes boats only (actually just one boat, USS Lapon, SSN 661). We rarely used the diesel, but when we did, it sure put out some smoke!
"Je Reviendrai de Loin" translates as "I'll come back from far away" ("loin" is far in distance rather than in time, usually). My mother is French-Canadian so we grew up speaking French at home, although I've very rusty at it now and besides, we spoke "French-Canadian" rather than "real French", at least from a Parisian's point of view..............
I appeared to have strayed considerably from clarinets, my apologies.
