 Problems w/ WW&BW
Author: Jeff
Date:   2000-01-16 22:44

I just thought I would use this message board to vent. On January 5, I ordered a Bb Clarinet from the Woodwind & Brasswind. The operator told me that it would take 10 days for my clarinets(I got the try out 3 deal) to get here. Well, Friday was 10 days. So I called them to ask where my clarinets were, and the operator told me that they are 2000 woodwind orders behind in their ShopCheck Department and aren't sending anything out until they get somewhat caught up. So, I am quite annoyed right now. They better get here pretty soon, though, because I am really anxious to start playing a new instrument!

Sounds like ww&bw is "caught in the trap of it's own success!"

Try the instruments at Weiner's if you live close by New York. I tried out 8 R-13's before picking out an R-13 and it was a really good deal. I'd rather go somewhere than have to wait for a mail order!

I would do that, except I live in Ohio!

I had some problems with the ww and bw last summer. They shipped my horn to the wrong address, then re-shipped it and it wasn't set up properly, as far as all the keys working correctly, etc. Eventually it was straightened out. Just some operational problems related to their move from Elkhart to South Bend, I think.

If you're really worried about it and you live in Ohio, why not take a snowy midwinter trip down the toll roads to South Bend and pick up the horn yourself?:-) It's a real store, you know.

Yeah, I know, but I really don't feel like driving 406 miles(what the Yahoo MapQuest thing said) to get there and back.

This problem is easily remedied. Find another store that offers the trial offer and buy from them and cancel the other order. This way you are "helping" WW&BW get caught up, and you will not have to wait so long for your order. Seriously, If you get this kind of treatment before the sale, you can imagine what will happen after the sale.

Try Wichita Band Instruments (wichitaband.com). I have used them before with great success. I have also heard many good things about weinermusic.com, but no personal experience.

Good luck.

I have not have any problem with them.My communication method is by e-mail. Their international section woman, who seems to know clearly her responsibility, responds by e-mail from U.S. to Japan. At least you have to talk with someone responsible, not operator.

Fro example, I ordered a Swedish manufacturer's mute and they replied to me by e-mail the shipping will be around mid of February.

Moreover,I obtained an e-mail from them that all the orders within a week are accumulated within that week, they work with them next week:Check or credit card validation, five point checks by repairmem, packaging, and shipping.

Another problem might be y2k problems when they check credit cards. Visa and MasterCard have many problems on Y2k.
For example double charging.Even if it is the case, they will not show us such a real obstacle.

wwandbw homepage has a mailing address. Why not 'request' them to aggrevate?

Interestingly enough, IMS ships same or next day; perhaps International orders are accumulated for a week by WW & BW? I can't imagine a mail order place waiting a week to accumulate & ship domestic orders!

The way I view it there is nothing special about WW&BW deals. Muncy, IMS, Weiner and Music1-2-3 (in NJ) all are very competitive & at most times should have sufficient stock to allow for multiple trials. Music 1-2-3 has a guaranty on price that would seem difficult to beat. I got a quote on a Yamaha YAS-52 alto sax last week that was incredible, followed by an email confirmation w/guaranty of low price for 30 days. Incredible some of the prices you see. Finally, I don't think that $50-$100 up or down in price is anywhere near as important as finding a clarinet that you like & think plays "your sound" the best.

I called the WW&BW yesterday to see if there had been any changes, and I was told that it would be another 10-14 days. For them telling me it would only take 10 days, I am really starting to get irritated. Maybe the WW&BW should do something to the price of my instrument to make me happy, but I doube that that will happen.

Best Regards,

Jeff

I recently purchased an A clarinet from them. It took two mail trials to find it. On top of that, I chose a Geenline. You see, the first three were R-13 wood A's..."factory fresh" (yeah, right), and they were just dreadful. Complete dogs.

I'd been hearing that it's increasingly difficult to find good wood buffets, and I had recently heard a very good greenline Bb played. So, I decided to try out a batch of the Greenline A's. I had my professor check them out and he mentioned that when he flew down to the BBWW, it took him all day to find one wooden buffet that played as well as one of the greenlines that had been sent to me. (Mind you, I'm not sure if he actually picked that particular wooden one up, but that he found it took him many a wood clarinet before he found a decent one.)

I found out that since I was stuck to trying only a limited number of Buffet clarinets, the likelyhood of finding a good greenline was higher than finding a decent wooden R-13 clarinet.

Please note, brand names and model ratings are very personal judgments--leblanc vrs. buffet vrs. yamaha--we've all heard the arguments/discussions. So, you can take or leave mine.

One more note, I've heard that for a commission, you can arrange to have a reputable musician chose a "good" clarinet for you. This way you don't have to spend and experience the extra cost and aggravation of going through numerous mail batch trials.

Good luck, and hope your shipment comes in soon.

That is true - there are a few people out there that will charge you to hand-pick & set up a clarinet for you. For those of you who can't get to a music store with a good selection and can afford the premium, it's a godsend. While the clarinet selected may not be "perfect" for your tastes, you can be reasonable assured that the intonation and mechanics will be pretty much spot on, and the sound will be at least in the "normal" range.

After I thought the WW&BW was a bad company, I had to change my mind as my clarinets came earlier than I had expected. They were a little late, but Late is better than never.
