 Gordon Expands!
Author: Henry
Date:   2004-10-23 23:57

Some of you may be interested in "Flute Lessons via E-mail" that just appeared on Sax-on-the-Web. The author is Gordon Palmer, "our" Gordon(NZ) who contributes often and expertly to this BB and, even more so, to the Forum on SOTW. Not being a flutist, I can not judge the quality of his teaching method but, as always, I'm struck by the scientific approach. I always wonder how Gordon manages to do enough repair work to survive, given all his other time-consuming activities!

As a bonus, there is a great picture of him as well.

I was impressed by Gordans unique approach in teaching the flute via e-mail. I am going to recommend it to my grandaughter who has just started her first year flute at school in 4th grade.

Well, I wish Gordon the best in the new endeavor. He certainly takes the scientific approach to all his undertakings and this should be a well thought out and careful approach. Gordon and I have corresponded on many issues and he is an amazing fountain of knowledge and experience on woodwind technique and repair issues. I have never traveled to NZ so we have never met but are somewhat kindred spirits on many issues.

David Hattner offered something similar a while back for "virtual" lessons as well. The idea makes practical and economic sense, particularly for those that don't have easy access to a good teacher.

I'm a fan as well, and glad to see he looks about like I thought he would look.

Aw, shucks! I never meant to be THAT public!

Administration at Saxontheweb thought that this informal email material should be on the site, after I had sent it to about 150 requesters at the site, many of whom seem to have found some use for it.

Henri wrote "I always wonder how Gordon manages to do enough repair work to survive, given all his other time-consuming activities!"

I do two to three hours average 'at the bench' per day. My freehold home is simple but very well situated, I will never be particularly wealthy by luxury living standards, and cannot afford much overseas travel, but otherwise, my quality of life is pretty darn good!

There is a saying that I like, in various versions, about how we can spend our entire life climbing a ladder, only to find it is up the wrong wall.
