I'm a sophomore at the University of Northern Iowa, and my clarinet professor is retiring at the end of this year. I'm sure we'll find an excellent replacement, but I'm still just a little nervous about what could happen next year with the lack of money public universities seem to have these days. I have been seriously thinking about transferring, but all of the other aspects of our music program are excellent. Have any of you gone through this situation while in college?

I've had my very excellent teacher leave for an out-of-state orchestra gig. I was placed with another very good teacher the next semester. Both were very good, in different ways. It helps to get different points of view. If you're worried that somehow you won't get lessons, talk to your advisor, but I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it. The lack of money public universities have is nothing new; I'm sure your department has contingency plans.

iowagrl; I have met him a few times and have heard him play. He was very nice to me and always had time to answer my questions. Does he still make his own reeds?
