I'm considering an Evette-Schaeffer Master Model (circa 1970). I'm not familiar with this brand. The owner is a professional and says that this very close to the R-13. I'm an amateur who hasn't played in years but wanted something better than a student model. Would this be a good choice? It's been completely overhauled with cork and hand-wrapped pads, etc. I would like some thoughts on this model since I'm not familiar with Evette. Thanks.

Please do a search right here on the BBoard. There is a lot of information on the Master Model already posted.

Beth,
The information by the owner is accurate. The master model plays very much like an R-13. I believe the master model is actually an R-13, except the wood body has some minor flaw. The master model is somewhat comparable to the current E-13 models. In my opinion the master model is closer to a pro model, than an intermediate model. It is definitely way above a student model.
About two years ago, I also started playing again after a long layoff. I found my master model in a pawn shop for $60, and had it completely overhauled. Turned out to be one the best finds I ever made. The clarinet looks and plays beautifully.
By the way, how much does the owner want for it?

Beth,
Thanks to Mark, we got confirmation from Buffet last month that the Master Model Clarinet is in fact an R-13 with only cosmetic flaws. Here is his post of Dec. 23.

Dear Mark,
The master model was made by the same persons who made the R13 and yes they are R13 with little cosmetic flaws but nothing is wrong accousticly.

OK - given all this about the Master Model, how much could one expect to pay for such an instrument? I under stand that condition is a big issue, but lets take an example:
Sound: hard to tell the difference between this and an R13
Keys: Excellent - since they are solid, they look like brand new silver plated keys.
Bell: small crack (but notice sound comment above)
Upper joint: one check and it appears to have been pinned as a cautionary measure.
Just been overhauled and adjusted - with a good air leak check.
Reason for asking is that my instructor, who is a professional, wants to buy this horn. However, after testing a Concerto and an 10SII, all of which did not live up to this Master Model, I'm now a bit reluctant to give it up!
