Does anybody have any opinions as to the quality of the Yamaha YCL-CSVN? I'm interested in finding out what people think about it.
Also, does anybody know what the "N" designation in the model number means? I found the -CSV listed on the Yamaha site, but not the -CSVN.

The YCL-CSVN is the same as YCL-CSV except for nickel-plated keys...GBK

Well, that's funny... the salesman assured me up and down that those were genuine silver-plated keys. Plus, the finish on those keys is a lot whiter than on my old Bundy (which I KNOW was nickel-plated), and it's also a lot less slippery and generally feels much better, more professional. It's also starting to tarnish.
Maybe it's a mistake on the sales receipt, I don't know. One way to find out: is the model number printed anywhere on the clarinet itself? I looked once and couldn't find it, so I just used the model number on the receipt

Well, it's official: it was a mistake on the receipt. It's a CSV.

The N does not mean Nickel.
See, when the USS Enterprise was launched as the first Nuclear aircraft carrier, they adopted the N designation. (CVN-65)
Japan adopted this also, so the N means that the keys are radioactive.
Their new clarinet has the Hamilton plating which contains lead, so that the N-component is shielded. Hamilton was (as you know) the main nuclear physicist on the Nautilus project, and developed the shielding.
He was hired by Yamaha during the Russian incursion of 1974 into Mongolia (which threatened Japan) to develop acoustical weaponry, of which their new instrument is a beneficiary.
And YOU thought that The Daily Show was the main source of information in the new era!

CPW: Does the radioactive key plating mean that the sound will be radiant? Or does the lead shielding mean that the sound will be dead?

Well, I dont know about the sound, but if it is radioactive, then not just the sound will be dead.
