Louis Spohr
Clarinet Concerto No. 4 in E minor

Thea King Clarinet
English Chamber Orchestra

Anyone have any feedback about this recording ... please only respond if you do, thanks.

i heard this on the radio once while driving my car, and it made me wince.
then again- my recording of the John Ritchie concertino ALSO makes me wince, so maybe it's just the clarinet?

Thea and Spohr don't mix. Her technical resources are not great, and she has to slow down drastically to get through the thick patches. There's no attention left for making music.

She's fine -- actually, very good -- on Brahms. On anything technically more difficult, it's painful.

De Peyer made the best Spohr #1 recording. Denman did all 4 very well. Ottensamer is reliable. Leister is awful -- technically perfect, but sleepwalking.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

I remember hearing the concert recording a number of years ago and was surprised by the number of technical errors she made. I later heard the Meridian recording that she made. In at least the technical aspect, it is much better than the concert performance -- not surprising considering the opportunity for retakes. It's been so long since I listened to it, however, I can't compare it to other recordings out there.

Best regards,
jnk

G'day ... and thanks very much for your input ... I'll stick with my existing Naxos recordings I think

The only recording of the Spohr I have is by Ottensamer on Naxos. He's good but his sound gets a bit unpleasant on times on some of the higher stuff (I mean, it's hard to play that high with a nice sound, but these are professionals!)

DH - yes, I agree ... but on the whole - they're fair recordings and the orchestral accompaniment isn't too bad considering it's budget priced

I was disappointed by the Naxos Spohr recordings. I've only listened carefully to the 2nd Concerto, but it has some glaring editing problems (a couple bars with five beats instead of four, and a sudden unmarked tempo change that sounds like a bad splice). Ottensamer and the orchestra sound fine, but the recording could have used some basic quality control.
