Well, maybe free for our non-US brethren, but I seem to recall Uncle Sugar taking a few bucks out of my income each year... I'd like to think of this as "pre-paid".

Thanks!

The AFB pages had a few hundred pieces listed for stream - more than any other band online I've seen so far.

Hi everyone!!!

There is also another way of finding songs for ANYTHING on the net...

its called lycos music downloads - its really really really good.... usually always has results for most songs and they are most of the time good quality. Its just a suggestion if the sites that have been given before dont have something...

http://music.lycos.com/downloads/

just give that a go anyways if you cant find what you are looking for.
There is one thing though, the site doesnt publish the group that is playing the song... so you will just have to deal with punting for the right recording however i have come across a few of the american air force recordings through this site

happy hunting

Jazz

A veritable concert band cornucopia. Msloss writes the truth. Let's see, if the U.S. Air Force Band downloads were all funded with taxpayer dollars and I served in the military all those years, that means that I, that I ... paid my own salary?? Argghh, FOUL!! v/r Ken

While not necessarily free to all, if you are a music educator or private teacher you can request cd's from The President'e Own Marine Band in D.C. They send them out for educational purposes only, but it doesn't hurt to look into it. They have quite a few cd's out.

my frm. College Roommate is one of their Clarinet Soloists (Jeff Strouf). Some of the violin parts that they end up playing due to transcriptions are monstorously difficult.

I love that stuff.

Ah. I always was only allowed to listen to the USAF Academy band while standing at attention or presenting colours during parades (being a former USAF Academy cadet). It's nice to be able to hear air force bands while SITTING DOWN for once!!!!

Thanks for the links. They serve TWO purposes for me! (A) good music and (B) a good idea of just how much work I really need to do before even beginning to THINK about earning some money for playing.

Oh no! I joined the Air Force!

I was a little disappointed to see that the CDs are not sold to the public. (Why?) Such great music - and if you're a yank abroad like me it is nice to hear one's home tunes occasionally.

Thank you for posting this.

Trivia question for the day:

--If you were a cadet at USAFA and being a musician, you should know the nickname the marching band gave for the bands' daily troop support ceremony. What is it?

Hmmm . . . gonna need a while to think back to this. I wasn't in the marching band there (since it was brass only . . . those woodwind discriminating jerks) but maybe if I think hard enough I'll remember it. Can I get a clue? Are you talking about what was played while marching into lunch?

Not to be a name dropper, but I "know" one of the clarinetists in the USAF band. (We drive the same model of car and met in person this last Labor Day weekend at a get-together of enthusiasts for that car. Before that, we had communicated over the Internet.) But, he's been accepted into flight school and OCS and will soon be leaving the band.

--1/2 the answer wins the prize. "Noon tunes" was (and traditionally still is) the USAFA band's nick for the the daily cadet lunch detail. v/r Ken
