Hi, I got this letter in the mail from Yamaha for being part of the ICA about the Yamaha YCL-CSG, their new custom clarinet. From the letter and reading the specs on it, it seems to be like a great clarinet. But my question is if anybody has tried it at all and if they liked it?

The CSG or "G" series is deffinetly worth checking out. Bil Jackson and Joaquin Valdepenas both switched a few years back and and they sound awesome on the CSG's. I have played alot of CSG's since 2003, I don't think they are what I am looking for, but have alot of nice qualities. Like the Slemer "Recital", the CSG has a smaller bore, 0.563 if I am not mistaken, which I happen to like alot. The intonation is still being worked on, so I would probably wait and see how things progress over time.

Let's not forget that there are ad execs who probably do not play clarinet, who sit in a room all day long and whose sole purpose is to write publicity blurbs...GBK

The Recital model is really, REALLY heavy in weight.
I'd think that the Yamaha must weigh a lot less.
When I was at Backun's shop I played a lot of Bells and selected the small bore bell for my R-13. I almost didn't even try it!!

I also got the same letter from Yamaha. While at Clarinetfest, I had an opportunity to try the CSG a few times and was very impressed. The quality of wood was some of the best I've seen on a clarinet. The keywork fit my hands perfectly and the key action was supurb. It had a wonderful sound. I did not notice any intonation problems, although I did not have a tuner with me to check. As far as the weight, I didn't feel it was any heavier than my R13. I did not care for the short barrel length. At this time, according to Yamaha, you can only get different length barrels from them since they are an odd size. The clarinet comes with either silver plated keys or the Hamilton gold which sells for somewhere between $100-200 more. I was told the Hamilton gives the clarinet a darker sound. I do not believe the plating on the keys will change the sound. It makes no sense to me accoustically. I could tell no difference in playing the two different plated clarinets they had at Clarinetfest. Anyway, if I were looking for a new clarinet the CSG would definitely be on my short list.
