I'm trying to help one of my students identify an old clarinet. The only engraving on the instrument include Bb and H.P. on both the upper and lower bodies and Carl Schubert Bb Austria on the bell. It is a wooden instrument, with apparently dyed wood (it is a reddish-brown fine grained wood showing through) with key rings on only the #5 and #6 finger holes. There are no other finger rings, and the register hole is on the front, not rear of the instrument. There are 11 keys (not including the register key) on the instrument with the keys apparently a true silver. Any ideas?

Ken -
A little further detail about the key layout, excluding the rings, would be helpful but what you describe would seem at first glance to be a Mueller type 'simple system' horn.

The Bb means key of Bb.
HP means high pitch (A=456 rather than the current A=440).
11 keys probably means Mueller system since the later Albert system (descended from the Mueller system) has 13 keys.
The number of key rings could mean either Albert or Mueller as some Alberts only have the two you mention while some have more.

I was cruising the eBay auction site and came across this item. It sounds very much like your description.

I agree with the above posts. I have on my comp. desk yet, my old Thibouville, which we discussed [under J T L], yours sounds just like it! Look below for our discussion in those posts. Rendall's list of makers doesnt show a Schubert, could be a little-known or a "stencil". Perhaps Mark can look it up in Langwill. Don
