Found a Martin Freres that is 18 and 3/4 inches tall to the top of the MPC, anybody have an idea what the proper name of this instrumet would be and of course how it would be used? Needs pads but other than that it is in very good condition, all wood with silver keys,no cracks. The local repairman says $300 to pad and tune ???

Based on length, it is probably an Eb soprano clarinet.

Try playing an open "G" on it, that is, the note you get when all the finger holes are open and none of the keys are pressed. Comparing the note you get with a piano will tell you what pitch the clarinet is:
If you get an F, this is a Bflat soprano.
If you get a G, this is a C soprano.
If you get an A, this is a D soprano.
If you get a Bflat, this is an Eflat sopranino.
If you get an Eflat, this is an Aflat sopranino.
I don't think small clarinets are made in any other sizes.

Just a note, the Eb is considered a soprano not sopranino. It is a companion to the D clarinet just like the A and Bb are considered companion instruments.

As friend of mine once said, does anything get smaller than the little Eb? I think it should be outlawed as a violation of the 8th amendment if it does.
Not meaning to be too incredibly stupid, but I've heard of it refered to as both. I'm wondering if it picked up the name sopranino to help with confusing the Bb soprano with it. I know I like calling it sopranino because it's more fun to say.

There is an Ab sopranino that is smaller than the Eb. This little guy would only be about 13 inches long or so. Leblanc makes one and there is another maker but I can't recall who right off hand.

I've seen a Buffet Ab (at ClarinetFest in Columbus on the Buffet table) but I don't know if they still make them or someone had loaned it to them.

I think there's a company in Italy that still makes them also. However I think its one of those custom order things where you order it and they'll call you when Luigi gets it finished.
