 Full Boehm pitch problems

My 67 Buffet after numerous attempts by the seller/repairman seems now to be able to function but out of tune,I got so frustrated I bought a new R13, now I can really see that the barrel is too short and even with the new barrel from R13 it still plays out out of tune ?

What results do others have playing on this intrument?

Could be your mouthpiece is part of the problem.

I would suggest you visit someone like Clark Fobes who makes and sells both mouthpieces and barrels to see if you can come up with something that works.

Is the repairman a woodwind specialist? Many of the music stores around here have repairmen that will pad & cork a woodwind, but their forte is brasswinds. When it comes to woodwinds, ya gotta find someone who specializes in woodwinds. Our school used to take all their instruments to a store deep into town for fixing and overhaul. The brass came back in excellent condition, but I almost always had to go back over the woodwinds to correct even minor things like bent keys and off set pads.

I judge from your post That your Buff [67?] is an F B, a complete 20/7 or lesser? I have an old P M and a Sel FB, 20/7's, and both go flat above top of staff G. I attribute that to lack of polycylindrical , or reversed-cone bores, which came later. I have heard that because of added length for the low Eb, the lower notes need lip-help to be in tune. I dont seem to notice! If you can describe your problems further, some of us can help more. It may be that pad height adjustments would help, before trying the barrel/mp route. Don

Kevin-

When I first started in the early 50s, my parents found a used instrument that turned out to have almost exactly the same problem as yours. When in college, I swapped the barrell for a longer one, but it didn't solve the problem.

What I finally concluded, was that the instrument was made for a higher pitch than A-440, which was not unusual in the early half of the century. Perhaps it isn't a true "High Pitch" with A-456, but maybe somewhere around A=445. When you pull the barrell out for C-on-the-staff, throat tones become so flat you can't lip them into tune.

The best you can do with such an instrument is to compromise tuning by pulling out in the middle joint, as well as at the barrell. That may be enough to get by, but replacing the instrument is a better solution.

Well to begin with it came with a too short non Buffet Barrel(no stamp)if I had some idea of what length is right I could work on pad adjustments The upper joint was pinned but the crack did not appear to go through, after playing it for a while,I regained some lip after a good spell away from playing, then I began to notice surface cracks going into trill key tone holes, then I began to use my lower register, well, the repairman said he could fix it so he epoxied cracks, seems ok now but pitch problems remain, because of missing practice due to shop time I bought new R13,well the bottom line is the seller repairman said if he couldn't fix it he'd refund 750 I paid But being overly concientious I'm willing to let him keep trying to improve it and use it as a cart around or alternate/backup any ideas what I should ask him to do next?I did agree to buy used instrument with all the risks and think he is an honest person, although now someone can say I got suckered.
