I desperately need an analysis for k622 and finzi concerto!
Author: Camilla
Date:   2004-10-13 13:45

I am studying for my A level in Music in the UK, and need to analyse both the Mozart k622 clarinet concerto and Finzi Opus 31 clarinet concerto. I was wondering if anyone knew of any resources whether paper or online where I could get a full analysis because I'm really struggling and have a deadline!

Thanks

Camilla

What's the nature of your "struggle"?

Have you been unable to find any information in the library?
Is your teacher unwilling to suggest any other resources?

It's an independent investigation and report. It's too specialised to find in the library, I've searched every one in our area. I rang James Ching to see if they did one, but I was told that no-one did the Finzi, but they could employ someone to do it for me at a cost of about £60. And teh Mozart would be £50ish. There's no way I've got that kind of money. I basically have to compare the two, differences ets as they are both concertos. But I'm not experienced enough to do a full analysis of one movement myself. I need to work on someone elses. I also have to write a composition based on aspects of both piececs, which I can't do if I don't fully understand them. So you can see why I really need an analysis of some description!

Perhaps you need to discuss with your teacher the fact that, for you, at this time, this particular assignment may be over your head.

BTW - As one of many teachers on this bulletin board, I don't think you will get a lot of sympathy when you bring up the notion of employing someone to do the work for you.

Doesn't that defeat the purpose of self-discovery? ..GBK

Camilla -

It's your A level, and if you want it, you need to do your own analysis. That mean you do your own research.

There are many sources on the Mozart Concerto, and, several for the Finzi.

You library catalog (or, for that matter, Google) will find Colin Lawson's book on the Mozart Concerto, and Lawson's bibliography will take you to much more.

Your music librarian will be able to put you into dissertation databases, in which you will find, for example, the Larson and Pittfield dissertations on British clarinet concertos.

That's your headstart, which took 10 minutes to find. You're on your own now.

No wonder A level results tend to mean little or nothing any more, because of the grade inflation. It is all this non-examination based course work being copied out of other people's dissertations which means everyone gets an A whether or not they know a crotchet from a quaver.

A lecture on ethics would do you more good than a dissertation on these concertos.

Thankyou graham.

I just wanted to let you know that I got a distinction at grade 8, and am working towards my diploma. The syllabus requests this assignment and at seminars we have been told to find an analysis and work with it. I'm also studying biology chemistry and maths, so don't automatically presume I'm stupid. Thank you

"I desperately need an analysis for k622 and finzi concerto!"

Then do it.

If you thought my post specifically said you were stupid, then you are stupid, as it did not say that.

Le White has correctly identified what you should do.

Camilla, remember this - professors now have databases where they can find if someones work is "lifted".

Best not to do it.

You'll benefit most by taking the time to do it right and do it yourself. It'll be an experience that could very easily be the one to mark a cornerstone in your studies and your future. If you're to analyze the pieces mentioned, then get some good recordings, put yourself alone in a quiet place to listen in a relaxed fashion one time through--merely enjoying the work. Make mental notes of what you enjoyed and what you did not. Then listen again while looking at the sheet music for the pieces. Keep your note pad beside you at all times while researching this topic because you never know when inspiration will hit. Then do the research involved in the history of the music, composer, etc. You might, at that point, then look into reading what some others have thought as an ADDITION to what you have discovered on your own.

Cammilla

Here is a start for you. If you understand Sonata form then the Mozart will be fairly easy to analize, Movt 1 sonata form, 2 movt ternery with coda finale is a rondo. Colin's book on the concerto will help alot. The Finzi isnt too hard, movt 1 ABA with intro and cadenza, movt 2 is again ABA finale is a rondo. Hopes this helps to get you started, I may have an essay that I did while at the Birmingham Conservatoire regarding the concerto but can't be sure. I must say that 'A' levels are far easier than when i did my music one in 1997, I had to know 4 symphonies backwards and then in the exam write a detailed essay on the extract of score, it could have been any movt, any section any symphony. Can't moan i do have several letters after my name. But ot does pay to do these things as soon as there set, I missed out on a 1.1 degree by 2% because I went out the night before i was due to give a seminar with friends and i hadn't prepared any think for it.
Anyway enough of the lecture hope you get it done.

sorry to drop in like this on a slight tangent, but i've been trying to find contact details for James Ching (the one who does A level resources), and came across Camille's reference in her hunt for Finzi Concerto info. if anyone can tell me how to get in touch, please let me know on LP@kingsbury.brent.sch.uk
Thanks for your time, and hope to hear from someone!

Read William Lovelock's "Form in Brief" ... it's all there

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Speaking as someone (I'm sure not the only one who has posted above though...) who has completed A level music relatively recently, any 'analysis' you find on the net will not be what you need.

You don't want to know about first performances or anything like that...the analysis paper for A level music has very little of this. You need to be able to lift it straight from the page. Remember, all you have in the exam is a blank score.

Hi Camilla,
Im also studying the 2 works for A level music. Im finding it hard becaus there not alot of stuff available on the internet. But, if you go through listening to the works repeatedly and listening out for points it helps. If poss, have the score in front of you aswell.
Good Luck

Camilla.........Both Brenda and Mary (as well as perhaps others) suggested listening to performances of the pieces.

Regarding the K622...........yes, there are MANYYYY recordings of it. Yes, Marcellus is great but try the Harold Wright/BSO recording. Two different appraoches, two different styles. I have both and prefer the finesse playing of Wright.

Now that you have the recordings (assuming), get a GOOD score. Sit, listen and annotate it.
A while back, there was a thread (do a search) wherein various scores were 'compared'. GBK made mention of several good ones and not so good ones (eg: Schirmer).

Ditto for the Finzi.

Good hunting and happy listening.

Also, I caught your later response wherein you mentioned / clarified........."at seminars we have been told to find an analysis and work with it."

regards
dennis
