A friend of mine recently bought an old clarinet off of e-bay and we cannot find out anything about it. It is a F. Barbier- Paris and it has the sign of a scarb on it, we think the serial number is 1151 but is difficult to read. The person she bought it from bought it at an estate sale. This is all we know, can anyone tell us about it? Thanks.

A believe there were some postings about F. Barbier on these pages in the past, you might check the Archives. As I recall, the upshot was that F. Barbier was more or less the student line of clarinets for Selmer-Paris. Hopefully someone can confirm or deny or supplement this info.

Sorry I'm finding this thread so late! I have a 1931 Selmer catalogue which lists the Barbier as the low end of the student line at that time. I also own a 5-piece Selmer Barbier silver-plated metal clarinet (it also came in wood) that I re-padded and restored. It's better than the average metal student clarinet, but it isn't an outstanding instrument. Barbiers typically sell in antiques malls and flea markets for under $100. I got mine for $30. It was essentially undamaged but in grubby, "garage horn" condition, tarnished black. It needed complete restoration, with all new corks and pads and several new springs. The case reeked. I'm always delighted to find something that filthy, since the ick-factor holds the price down!

Her clarinet is not a metal one, it is wooden. We both play the clarinet and know the difference, so I am sure it is made of wood.
