Jez knows more than almost anyone about London clarinetists. Jez - are you there?

The London Philharmonic’s current members are here: http://www.lpo.co.uk/about/whos_who.html. Their archivist should know about former players, and I believe Robert Hill and Nick Carpenter are members of the Klarinet list.

Kell was the original principal in the Philharmonia, followed after a short time by Thurston. When he was forced to retire (from lung cancer) in 1952, Bernard Walton stepped in and was there, I think, through the mid-60s. Their archivist should know the history. http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/administration.php, and the current player list is at http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/biographies/playerlist.php

The Pittsburgh Symphony player may have been Sigurd Bockman, who was principal when the orchestra recorded the Kodaly Dances of Galanta under Reiner. See http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000029P9/002-6655906-6072865?v=glance When this CD came out, there was a review that spoke of Reiner (who was Hungarian) spending hours with Bockman to get the sound and style just right. Unfortunately, I can’t locate the source for this. The Pittsburgh site says the have a message board http://www.pittsburghsymphony.org/msg_index.html, but it apparently hasn’t gone on line yet, since there are no links from it. The personnel are here: http://www.pittsburghsymphony.org/pghsymph.nsf/webmusicians, and the Personnel manager or Librarian should know.

The Ostankino Large Symphony is known in English as the Moscow Radio Symphony http://www.dschjournal.com/reviews/rvs20op93.htm I haven’t been able to find a personnel list under either name.

The Berlin Philharmonic Brahms recording was made in 1977-78. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000007ODY/ref%3Dpd%5Fir%5Fimp/002-6655906-6072865 Leister was the principal during that time. http://www.arts.ufl.edu/MUSIC/clarinet/leister.html I think there were dual principals for at least part of that time, but I can’t imagine that Leister would permit anyone else to do the recordings

Best regards.

Ken Shaw
