Reeds for Alto and Contra Alto
Author: MikeyBoy

I was wondering if these 2 clars use reeds specifically for them. like do i need to have an alto clar reed to play it or can i use an alto sax reed? i know tenor sax reeds can be used on bass clars, but is this an option? I wanna get a clar choir ready for our solo and ensemble contest ready and wanna use these 2 aux clars. i would be playing contra alto.

you can use bari sax reeds on a contra in a pinch, but they're smaller than contra reeds. you must place them precisely on the mpc. the size varies by brand. best to get contra reeds imo.

i use vandoren's on my contra. i think rico also makes contra reeds. they are of course, pricey, which is why folks use bari reeds, which cost less.

I regularly use alto sax reeds on my alto clarinet mps. While the sax reeds [generally] are a bit wider than the A cls, this has not caused any problems, as far as I can determine. I now play on a glass Pomarico mp #3; it and others of my mps are sufficiently wide to accept A S reeds. Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

ok, thanks. this is only for a contest, so like a one time deal. i rather not purchase special reeds if i can use substitute reeds. should i get the mouthpiece set up, serial number/brand of the clars for help to know what reeds ot use?

I played contra-alto for contest last year. I didn't own a contra reed, but there was one in the case. Having no idea whose it was, I just decided to try a bari reed. It worked wonderfully. Many other contra players in my school squeaked constantly when they played, but I never squeaked once. This may be because of the reed. I played on a LaVoz Medium Hard. Don't get carried away and eat a pixy stick right before though. I made the mistake of doing that and staining my reed green.

My contra uses Rico Contrabass/Contra-alto/Bass sax reeds. They work much better than the normal Ricos for soprano clarinet. They do tend to start warping after a few months' use.

Edit: It now apparently uses Rico Jazz Select 3M bari sax reeds.

You can buy alto and Contra-alto reeds too. Check out this site for the reeds. http://www.store.yahoo.com/1stopclarinet/saxophonereeds.html

On alto clarinet you can use alto sax reeds.
On bass clarinet you can use tenor sax reeds.
On contra-alto clarinet you can use bari sax reeds.
I've been doing this for 30 years, so I'm not just speculating.
