 Pity me! Need help.

Remember when I mentioned being scared of my first days in orchestra because of bass clef? Well, I am past those times and I can deal with it a bit better now. The concert went well by the way. :) I played all my solos correctly... the in between stuff kinda freaked out. lol

Anywayyy....

We're playing Der Rosenkavalier.... Lucky me, it's in treble clef... but in 6 sharps?! Yeah... Actually, that doesn't bother me at all. I'm used to it. :)
What does bother me, you ask? The register the majority of the piece is in! Strauss: "Oh, ok, bass clarinet can play in altissimo... a G here, an F# there. Tah dah."

Are there catches to some fingerings that I don't know about? (Mainly C#) And the majority of the time, I don't get the notes above E and F. (Yes I know how to half hole) Do I need a harder reed?? Why can't the 3 bassoons tune to me?!

AH!

On the bass clarinet you can play a lot of the altissimo with overblown fingerings rather than using the standard fingerings with the half hole. Play the C# like a throat F#, D--open, D#--G# key, E---A key, F--like B flat. Beyond that, just fool around until you find acceptable fingerings that you can use. I don't think it's necessary to get a harder reed; just practice learning to voice the higher notes.

The 3 bassoons probably can't tune to anyone.

cg,
You might consider grabbing a quick lesson with Larry Bocaner or Ed Cabarga (retired and current NSO bass clarinetists) --- they could fix you right up.

This is not a bass clarinet part-it's a basset horn part transposed for bass clarinet. If you can't get hold of a basset horn playing the part on an alto clarinet might be an option.

Our school actually owns 2 bassett horns. A selmer and a Prestige! I should see if I could get the original part. lol

The basset horn part is just as nasty as the bass part in Der Rosenkavalier. Actually, despite the bass clarinetist doubling on basset horn, the bass part still has lots of altissimo.

Moral of the story ... pretty his music might very well be, but it's cruelty to animals ... (Strauss that is).

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
