 Holton Bass Clarinet
Author: stagehand

Thanks for all the input on the Vito Bass Clarinet. We received it yesterday and the middle section was broke in two. They (the company) wants to replace it with a Holton model. Are the Holton's good bass clarinets? How are they compared to the Vito's?

Thanks,
Sara

Isn't the Holton one of Selmer's "brands"? Prob. Walt Grabner on the Yahoogroup bass-clarinet and/or Dave Spiegelthal [here], and others? can give you VG advice. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

Holton is a Leblanc brand and is a Vito, exactly identical as far as I know.

i remember playing a very expensive Holton plastic (hard rubber?) clarinet in about 1985- at the time it was priced $1,000 (nz$) more than any other plastic clarinet available. While not a professional horn, it was of a very high quality and certainly better than your average student clarinet..... Was this company taken over/absorbed by Leblanc or was this a long lost attempt at a "high end" student clarinet?
if they made a bass clarinet of a same quality it would be worth playing.

Holton has been a Leblanc line since, I think, the 60s. Before that, as the independent Frank Holton company, they were known for their brass instruments, never their woodwinds. Their saxes were generally mediocre (or were stencils) and their clarinets were nothing special either. All the Holton harmony clarinets I've seen since the company's absorption by Leblanc have been Vito copies (like the "Normandy" line). stagehand, why don't you contact Leblanc directly and ask them what (if any) differences there are between the Holton and Vito bass clarinets? The rest of us are merely speculating.

Yes...sorry about that...I seem to remember seeing a high end ( as in expensive) plastic clarinet in their line....although just now, I could not find it on their web site.

David Spiegelthal: How would I go about contacting Leblanc directly?

Thanks,
Sara

Gee, who owns Leblanc this week --- I guess it's Steinway-Conn-Selmer-Leblanc or something like that. Maybe they have a website?

(no sorry it wasn't Howarth- back in 1985 they had only just started making clarinets, and were known internationally for their Oboes.... i'm pretty sure it wasn't Howarth)
