 G#7 fingering
Author: wfg
Date:   2004-09-26 16:36

I received an email with a G#7 fingering for inclusion in the Woodwind Fingering Guide. I don't play reliably above C7, so I can't tell if this fingering works. The idea is to take G7:

RT oxo E|oxo G#

using the left pinky key used to play low E and the right pinky key used to play low G#.

Then add the top G# key to get G#7:

RT G# oxo E|oxo G#

It looks like it could work. Does it play G#7?

Doesn't work for me. I had never been able to play higher than F#7 before. With the gut-busting and biting effort I put into this fingering I got an extremely frail, squeeky A7! I am using Gonzalez FOF 3 3/4, maybe I should dig out some of my 20+ year old Vanny 5's.

jim -- Thanks for trying. FWIW, the submitter's model was a Buffet Crampon International model clarinet.

It worked for me, but without using the E key (left pinky key).
My setup is
Buffet BC 20
Vandoren B45
Glotin 3
BG standard ligature.

It worked for me with some effort.

Leblanc Concerto
Grabner MP
Rovner Dark
Gonzales FOF 3.75

Since the G#7 fingering is successful, I've added it to
http://www.wfg.woodwind.org/clarinet/cl_alt_4.html
for future reference. Thank you to everyone who gave it a try.

For those of you who got this fingering to work:

Once you've invested the effort to get the G#7 to sound, does the G7-Ab7 trill respond very well (trilling the top G# key, and if necessary, the pinky E key)?

Are there any variations on this fingering that might produce a sustainable A7 or A#7?

Tim
