This is a bit provincial, but did anyone else attend Gelmetti's performance of the 5th last week? I'd be interested to hear opinions on it. I'm still working on it myself. To me it was more "fluid" than I'm used to, but this in itself provided a revelation. It's 13 years since I heard it live, which may explain why I thought it sounded different in some of the textures. And the tempo of the scherzo?

William ... firstly, there ain't nothing provincial about your posting.
I heard this one and was singularly unimpressed with Gilmetti's Mahler, bloody Edo de Waart did enough of them in his tenure and I've had my fill for a long time.
The first half of the program however was wonderful and the selection of Richard Strauss songs was heavenly. And the soloist ... totally gorgeous (sigh).
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Don't know about the 5th but the 2nd in Melbourne last night was JUST WONDERFUL.

You mean the 1st?
It was definitely wonderful, however, the horns and 1st trumpet had some intonation troubles, and sometimes I was distracted by the 3rd clarinet changing instruments the way he did (And I should know, I'm doing that part at the moment! Bass, A, Bass, Eb, Bass, Bb, C, in that order LOL)

I heard the 1st (not 2nd) from Melbourne on the radio ... yes it was wonderful. Fancy that - Australian's giving good performances, is it possible?
The Melbourne Symphony's strings are glorious and the Oberon overture was delightful and finely crafted.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
