I have struggled with a B40 for many years. I really enjoyed the resonant tone the B40 was capable of. My favorite was the throat tones. The B40 facing was open enough to offer flexibility in jazz playing as well. The resistance was just too much for me. I decided to try a Morgan RM15 (seems well liked on this board). I expected to waste $100 on another mouthpiece inferior to my B40. To my surprise, this mouthpiece offered the same warmth and resonance as my beloved B40 without the effort and frustration. I did not have to change reed brands or do anything different...this mouthpiece is just consistant from top register to the bottom. During my last jazz rehearsal I discovered the morgan has more power than my B40 and during my orchestra performance I discovered that the Morgan is easier to adjust to pitch. Most importantly the tone on this Morgan is always the huge resonant tone I occassionaly got from the B40.
Anyone else having success with a Morgan mouthpiece? I'm curious what size reeds you are using. I am happy with V12 3.5

I played a RM-15 for a long time years ago. I agree with you that it plays very easily and with a nice robust tone. The only reason that I switched from it was that I was finding it difficult to keep my tone focused while articulating. Of course not everyone will find this to be so, but regardless, it is a terrific mouthpiece.

I'm happy to see you on this Forum. The folks here already know that I use Morgan mouthpieces. But, I wanted to answer your question about reeds. I use Alexander Classique #3 reeds on my RM15.

Roger, I tried the Classique 2.5's on the RM15. They were too soft, but a clip here and a clip there made them play fine. I'll try the 3's next time.

A key test of any mouthpiece is consistency of manufacture ----- OK, so you found one mouthpiece that plays well --- but if you try ten of them, how many will play equally well or better than yours? Or to put it another way, if you like your particular mouthpiece (of whatever brand, this is an academic question) and nine of your felllow clarinetists go out to separate music stores to try out the same brand and model, how many of them will like theirs?
On any given day, SOMEBODY will find a mouthpiece of ANY given brand and model which he/she will love. It's a matter of statistics --- keep that in mind whenever you read anyone's recommendation for a particular brand/model of mouthpiece. You may have found the one and only Acme X-007 mouthpiece in the entire country that plays great --- while your buddy may be playing a Splurt Y-008 that plays equally as well as 90% of any other Splurts chosen at random anywhere in the universe. This matters a great deal when you're recommending a particular mouthpiece based solely on your own experience.
