 Avery Fisher Haul??
Author: diz

Just been reading BBC Music Magazine's article on the Avery Fisher Hall, NY NY. Anyone seen the new layout first hand? I understand the NY Phil now plays under a higher ceiling with improved acoustics - plus, the audience surrounding them.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

If only it were so. There are numerous overhaul plans and discussions being tossed about including a complete gut-job, but no major changes have been made as of yet. Still the same old hall we have come to, er, love...

In old Philharmonic Hall, there were just a few seats with decent acoustics, all the way around on the side of the balcony and dress circle, with a bird's eye view of the stage. You could hear everything from there, but elsewhere, fuggedaboudit.

The Fisher design is considerably better, at least by comparison, but the acoustically best seats are still way around to the side. Whatever you do, never sit in the dress circle or the back of the main floor (i.e., places where you are beneath a higher level). Even in Carnegie hall, those locations are poor.

Best regards.

Ken Shaw

There is nothing wrong with Avery Fisher that a few cranes and wrecking balls couldn't fix, or on the other hand, just let that low brass section keep at it and it is bound to eventually do the required damage. :)

Having not read the article, nor having been inside Fisher since late June, I doubt that they have put any plans into place yet. I'm not sure how much a higher ceiling can accomplish if it was built, and picturing how the stage is set - I figure it to be really difficult to have the audience surrounding the philharmonic.

After being in attendance at several philharmonic concerts & other occassions at Avery Fisher (I've even performed there with my orchestra) and having sat at numerious varying seats throughout the hall, I can echo Ken Shaw's comments on the best seats...

However, during philharmonic concerts, my favorite seats are the first 3 or so rows on the right side of the main floor. I'm not sure how acoustics affect this spot, but I do like to be practically right next to the lower strings.

My favorite seat would be between Stanley and Mark...
