So You Wanna Play an Opera?
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

Jack Brymer wrote that a prime requirement for becoming a professional player is to be born physically robust. (He was an armed forces physical fitness instructor before he became an orchestral player.)

This story tells why: http://www.theadvertiser.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,10904391%255E16422,00.html.

16 hours, even over 4 days, is hard on anyone.

looking at the photo with the article, i'm not sure that "physically robust" is the term i'd choose.....

Ken - interesting article, thanks. If it were in Melbourne or Sydney I would book and go. Not a big fan of the Adelaide Symphony I'm afraid, although I applaud their ability to stage this monumental work twice now.

Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

Haha thanks for that, I actually know Airlie Smart mentioned in this article. Haven't caught up with her in a looong time, I actually had NO idea she was in ASO!

I definitely will not be going - can't afford it and couldn't sit through that much! Excellent decision on the physical aspects though.
