I am currently looking to get a bass clarinet to be used in a 4th-12th grade band program. I found a Vito 7166 for a good price. Are the Vito 7166 Bass Clarinets any good? Do they last with students playing them? Do they have any problems that send them to the shop a lot? I am hoping to get any and all information I can before purchasing this instrument.
Thanks,
Sara

Sara,
I bought a Vito 7166 Bass Clarinet a few weeks back and it has been playing wonderfully. I had to take it in to the shop to get a few keys adjusted, but it was a 10 min job that only cost five dollars. I have found it to produce a nice clear tone, that respondes fairly easily. I would suggest it as a nice cheaper bass clarinet.

I've been playing the older Yamaha YCL-221 which is supposed to be the same unit as the 7166. It's been a good horn, with my only complaint being some stuffiness in the upper register. Up until the new YCL-221 came out, the Vito 7166 was the one recommended by most doublers.
I have, however, tried the the newer Yamaha YCL-221 (new design) and found it to be more responsive in the clarion register, and also breaks down into two joints--and a smaller case. This might be something to consider if you want your kids to take horns home to practice.
That said, my 7166-clone has served me well over the past 5 years and has a nice sound. If you're getting a good deal on it, all the better.
