 new vandoren ligatures
Author: Ed
Date:   2004-09-24 14:09

I recently saw some literature about a new Vandoren ligature made of leather with interchangeable plates. (somewhat Rovner like design) Has anyone had the opportunity to try these and if so, any opinions?

i'd be curious to hear any thoughts from you folks too. i saw a picture of it and noticed that the plates are held in place by none other than [drum roll please........prrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...........cymbal crash!] VELCRO!!!! don't know how long that could possibly last. as a one-time owner of ROO tennis shoes back in the day, velcro doesn't last forever.

I saw the ad as well and my concern was for the leather stretching over time and the ligature losing its "grip" as a result. I'll take the metal band Optimum over the leather any time. The new design probably is more a marketing ploy to make more money than an attempt to offer an improved product. Buyer beware.........but if you really like how cool it looks, go for it.

I tried one, and felt that it took away some of the resonance from my sound. I'll stick with my Luyben!

what i did late last year
and it's lasted pretty well
was get my old Rovner Ligature from 1984
and the "tone plate" from a Vandoren Optimum (that i didn't use)
i made a slit in the Rovner, so that the humpy bit in the middle of the tone plate could go through the Rovner band
so i have a Rovner with the Optimum tone plate inserted
and i've used that as my ligature exclusively
for years i've used various metal ligatures, and to get me to abandon those (including various Bonades and a special customised "inverted two band with bonade bump left handed" model) took some convincing.
i play a variety of proffessional gigs, including several solo recitals a year, and have used this ligature in a variety of settings (orchestra/chamber/concerto)
