 Cleaning Cloth
Author: Clay

HII recently purchased a MYSTIC MAID Microfiber cleaning cloth. The sales rep. said it would be fine to use when cleaning silver. I used it on my clarinet and the keys look shiny and new. It left no noticeable scratches. My questions are, was this a good idea?? Did I harm my clarinet any way?? Should I purchase another cloth?? If so what kind?? Thanks!!!

I like to use either a microfiber cloth (a good one) or a silk scarf to clean my keys after playing. The microfiber is fine and will not scratch the keys - in my expereience.

I have always used a "Selvyt" cloth. It is a non-treated jeweler's polishing cloth which can be simply washed and dried when soiled. I have used these cloths for years. They contain no chemicals and are soft and lint-free.

The Selvyt cloth, traditionally used by jewellers, was/is about as good as cleaning/polishing cloth could be.

However now we have microfibre cloths which are also fantastic. The tiny one that came with my spectacles is fantastic.

However there is a very wide variety of fabrics marketed as microfibre. They may not all be so wonderful. I guess you get what you pay for, and some are pretty expensive. The Selvyt is not cheap either.

If it didn't scratch your keys than it is fine! It is very important to get the finger oils off of the keys to maintain the non-slip properties.

Cause finger oil is pretty slippery!

I've used both "microfibre" cloths and chamois....both seem to "work"...If you want to do a "pro" job just use a pair of white cotton gloves.
