 Lacroix clarinet info?
Author: Dave Spiegelthal

I'm restoring a M. Lacroix "A" clarinet that is both unusual (full-Boehm with low E-flat) and seems to be of very high quality, and I'm wondering if anyone knows about the marque. I've searched the Klarinet Archives and only found one reference, apparently a similar instrument was purchased in '97 in a pawn shop in Florida. I can't find anything on the Internet (and unfortunately, Lacroix is a very common French name), and there's nothing on Lars Kimser's serial number lists page. Mark, could you possibly take a gander at Langiwill's and see if it's in there? And anyone else having info, it would be appreciated.

Dave - Not listed in Rendall or any of the other "good books". You might check in Grove's Dict. Prob another good but little known Fr maker. I havent seen many A's with a low Eb!, might be able to transpose Ab or G? cl music , if there is any!! Don

Hi, Dave -
I have a Lacoix LP-B Albert system. So, now we know they go back quite a while. Only markings on mine are: M. Lacroix Paris and LP B. No serial #. Lacroix (or a relative-?) must have been making horns way back when the HP/LP transition was going on (late 1800s, early 1900s) but, other than that, let's hope someone knows more history.
The one I have, for an old horn, though quite 'used', has not disintegrated beyond hope of restoration. They probably used pretty good material at that time, this one anyway, so it's my guess they still do.
With the low Eb, seems like you have a pretty good piece of equipment to work with --- happy restoration(s).
Ron
