I have just read in the Archieves (Swiney Marcellus) about the work Hans Moennig did on R-13s and am wondering if anyone does the same quality work on modern clarinets, particularily LeBlancs and Buffets.

Good luck! I was lucky enough to have studied oboe with someone who made regular pilgrimmages to 15 S. 21st St in Philadelphia--so, when I was encouraged by my clarinet teacher to buy a professional grade clarinet, I thought first of Herr Moennig--who sold me a new R13 which he had tuned, for $25 less than local music stores sold "off the shelf" R13's. I don't know whether Tom Ridenour in Denton Texas does custom work on Leblancs or Selmers, but I'd not be surprised. Tom studied with Kalmen Opperman, among others, and Opperman sold to his students, at least, instruments that he had custom modified. Tom's sound (on an R13 with Opperman mouthpiece) was very focused, which only careful tuning can achieve; his intonation on that setup was quite good too. I'd be interested to know how he compares his old "opperman R13" to his own handiwork on the professional LeBlanc and to the Selmer that he extols.
