I really like Morgan mouthpieces. I suppose you are not buying that piece to fit into a clarinet section . . . right? If you're sure you want that opening, then I'd go for it. I often play an RM-15, which is considerably more conservative at 1.15mm than the J-7 you are considering. My RM-15 has a very open sound with little resistance - and it can put out a lot of volume without the tone cracking.

Be aware that Ralph's mouthpieces aren't always in stock, and delivery isn't always highly predictable. A 4-6 week wait is often advertised, but it can run longer. Ralph is a person . . . not a factory.

A Vandoren JB5 tip measures 1.47 mm or .058 inches. If you get a good one it is just as good as a Morgan and much less expensive. I have owned and played both.

Pomarico Jazz is either 1.39 or 1.48 tip.
Bay open model is 1.45 tip.

Are the worth the price? Definitely yes. Given the extremely high quality hard rubber formula and special mouthpiece design features Ralph Morgan uses in addition to the mouthpieces being hand-made, it seems to me that the price for a Morgan is very reasonable.

The wide tip opening? I'm on the same page as Fred in asking "Why?". Being a curious type, I've tried most of Ralph Morgan's mouthpiece models on clarinet and saxophone over the course of several years. On clarinet, I've played the RM10 (1.10 mm), RM15 (1.15 mm), RM28 (1.28 mm), J5 (1.25 mm), and J6 (1.35 mm) mouthpieces. Hands down, my favorite is the RM10. It's been my experience that the RM10 with stiffer reeds has a stronger tonal core and richer sound than a J6 with softer reeds. I've used both mouthpieces in various ensembles -- including a big band -- and found my RM10 set up to actually have more power and projection than what I was getting from the J6. This might sound counter-intuitive to the folks who think they need a wide tip opening for playing jazz. But, it's been my experience that one doesn't necessarily need a wide tip opening in order to get a big, projecting, sound.

wel my friend i have been playing musical instruments for a long time i am what you would call a natural i do not read music i can if i need to learn a tune but normally i play by ear i have played saxophones, irish low whistles, bagpipes, guitar,. i recently purchased a clarinet and i really like it in 1/2 day i could play the complete register of notes , in 1 weeks i could play some bluesy licks and songs,(partial) not including altissimmo. i have to figure those out still, i am not tring to be arrogant i am just giving my background ,that being said, the reason i am looking for a wide opening is not for projection it is for the bending qualities for blues and slow jazz,i guess i am tring to make it sound like a sax, but with a wide tipped opening i can move my notes around without using my fingers,(articulation) now i am still in my "trying to find myself in the clarinet world phase" i am not a pro like you guys (orchestra, jass etc.) i have always been a rebel in the music world (nonconformist ) my music may offend a true clarinet player. but music is from your soul not from books anyway that is my thoughts on the subject any hot tips or help please write

I will just add a little more advice which is important. Weh n trying mouthpieces, and especially crystal (in case you are trying the Pomarico) you should try a lot of them.

That wasn't mean. There's a ton of information already discussed (there's near 150,000 posts avail in here already) if you avail yourself of the Search feature.
