Aussies a chance to hear our brilliant national treasure devoting a (live) broadcast to Wagner, tomorrow night from the Hamer Hall, Melbourne.
8.00pm IN PERFORMANCE
MELBOURNE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Larissa Shevchenko, soprano
Glenn Winslade, tenor
Bruce Martin, bass
Oleg Caetani, conductor
Wagner Tannhäuser: Overture
Wagner Tristan and Isolde: Prelude and Lovedeath
Wagner The Valkyrie (Die Walküre): Act 1
Unfortunately the ABC does not stream its broadcasts at this stage.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

hi diz,
I'll tune in....
My flatmate, a freelance horn player, was asked to play in that concert but was already booked to do a concerto up here (Sydney); he said it would have been a good hors d'oeuvre to Adelaide. Yes, he's going down there for 3 months to do The Ring. The large box in the hallway I fell over last night ( nothing to do with Hill of Grace, Mark P.) apparently contains a Wagner tuba.

ken ... I have problems with the Adelaide Ring, frankly. I won't go and listen to singers with microphones ... the Festival Theatre stage isn't THAT vast afterall, no where NEAR the size of the Met's home. Other problem, is the pit orchestra they're using ...

Yeah a friend of mine is also playing Wagner Tuba in it - he's only 18 and a complete freak horn player.
Wonder if I can get student rush for this one?! lol yeah right methinks!

Well ... don't know how many fellow Aussies listened to this, but it was truely the MSO at its best (considering it was a live broadcast). I thought playing Walkuerenritt as an encore was delightful. God, if only the MSO would go to Adelaide and play in the pit for them ...

Liquorice ... good point, but basically the instruments of Wagner's day were basically the same ... the strings are identical (except for gut E strings, which most modern players use anyway in their wire bound form), the winds are only a couple of keys (to generalise) less than their modern cousins.
The intersting thing, however, is that the sound of wind instruments of Wagner/Berlioz' day had more "character" ... hard to describe and their modern cousins (again I generalise) seem to be more homogonized.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.
