Every night when I go to bed, I place my clarinet, inside its case, of course, besides me. When I do that, I find myself dreaming about music and eager to practice the clarinet the next day. When I don't, eh, I just skip the practice. I don't know why this works, but it does.
Am I just odd?
What are some other odd things have you heard of done with musical instruments? And please, no kinky "American Pie" references.

Actually, I've found if I think of something specific before I go to bed, I dream about it. And since I've told my friends about this phenomenon, they have it happen to them too. Like, if I go to bed thinking about parakeets, they will be in my dreams flying around or something. hehe.
Anyway, on to weird things I have done with my instrument. I've practiced while sitting on my bed, then laid down and fallen asleep hugging my clarinet. That has actually happened a few times. Usually I don't sleep long, because I subconsciously know that I am still holding it and I wake up suddenly because I am afraid of bending the keys. haha.

I've been frequenting yard sales lately, and I keep seeing "clarinet lamps" (where people stand a soprano on its bell, run wires up the bore, screw a bulb into the barrel and stick a shade on it)... WTF?! I'd never even heard of this before, and now I'm seeing them everywhere I look.
Granted, this isn't a musician's ritual like the first example, but it's definitely odd ; )

Juding from the quality of playing in the public schools (and some of the universities), I would say practicing with the instrument is a pretty unusual activity these days.

I like that french horn lamp.
In the movie "The Red Violin" there was a boy who slept with the instrument. He ended up dying at a young age - but not because he slept holding it.

I use my case to lean on while practicing sometimes. It's only a about a foot shorter than I am.
