I am planning to purchase a Eb Soprano clarinet. I have not played one in over 15 years and my purpose is to play at home and that's about it. I've been looking around and found several very very affordable clarinets and wondered what you clarient experts thought about it. I guess I would like the clarinet to sound good but I don't need a $1000 clarinet nor can I afford it. So I am thinking about one made by Rex and also one made by Laval. Anyone heard of these? and if yes what do you think about them.
Thanks for your help!

May I suggest that you contact your local repair shop?
I would avoid instruments on their "Do not repair" list.
Laval/Rex/Monique/Parrot and others of that strain are on this common list.

The thing to watch out for is instruments that cost less than an overhaul... they're likely to need one. This is a sure way to watch any savings evaporate.
Contact Dave Spiegelthal through the classified section for a quality instrument in good repair.

Laval?
Never buy a clarinet whose name is a palindrome.
Rex?
Never buy a clarinet whose name is the same as your neighbor's dog.
Seriously, they are both cheaply made CSO's (clarinet shaped objects) which will cause you much aggravation and futility.
The Selmer Bundy Model 1405 is a good, proven entry level Eb clarinet which plays in tune, has a pleasing sound and with very little maintenance, should last a long time ...GBK
