cheapest double case ever...or am I fooling myself?

As I recently bought an A cla, I definitely needed a double case that is not as bulky as this suitcase type thing. Last night, I talked with my husband about the DIY double case that one of the previous thread dealt with. And that turned on a lightbulb in our head and we succeeded in making a double case bag out of 'junks' in the house : first, some air-bubbled wrap vinyl pieces that were originally used to wrap and protect glasswares during the last moving trip. I wrapped 2 upper and lower joints; a super-safe notebook cover to put those 4 in; and an old notebook bag to carry them and 2 bells and other stuffs(barrels, reeds, etc).

The resulting artifact satisfies me...I certainly didn't want to spend another 250+dollars on the item.. I'll show it to my ensemble members next week to see their reaction.

One more thing is that I was quite touched by the effort done by my husband who is not so supportive on wife's clarineting ...

i went to play a concert in Germany a couple of years ago, and made my own clarinet case to take- a similar situation
- upper and lower joints wrapped in foam and placed in a plastic food storage box, in main compartment of laptop shoulder-bag
- bells/barrels etc in side pockets
this wasn't ideal, but the instruments were well protected
one disadvantage was that it took ages to set up/pack away (at least, compared to with the normal case, and certainly compared to the other musicians at gigs etc)

Lucy,

Kudos on using "around the house" items for your new case.

I am planning a combo case - with room for my new eefer - to be made from my briefcase-style Selmer case but I have enough room to just add some cutouts and velvet. I must agree though with Donald that the chore of getting your clarinets in and out of the case may become too much of a hassle in time. However, check out Terry Horlick's case redo stuff on this BB and see if you can adapt his ideas to include your new clarinet and the existing items at hand.

Getting rid of the bubble wrap would be a major step.

Thank you both for your inputs.

I read the posting and saw the picture of DIY double case. (Is that 'Terry Horlick case redo stuff' you mention?) However, moulding and covering with velvet sounded like a daunting task to me.. Bubble wrap certainly has both strength(EZ to get by and use) and weakness (hassle, indeed). I'll go back and read the thread again.

p.s. one of the ensemble members who checked out the picture on my website wrote that he thought it was a police photo of a seized bag with smuggled drugs...(alas..)
