I've been looking at buying an Eb clarinet, but I'm not quite sure about what brands I should consider. I don't want a top of the line Eb since I am not a pro and since they are darn expensive (like buffets). Any suggestions on a good brand?

The Selmer Bundy isn't too bad and I hear the Vito is OK. I use a Selmer Bundy with a Vandoren 5RV mouthpiece and it works quite well. However, the mouthpiece that came with it was very, very sharp so if you go this route, plan on replacing it.

Also, consider the Patricola Eb - it's relatively inexpensive and plays nicely in tune.

Consider a used pro instrument. The difference between a pro model and a lower priced student model Eb is significantly more extreme than between Bb instruments. Pitch and response in the upper registers is the main area of concern. If you intend to play the instrument in an orchestral setting (rather than a wind band) these issues are more important. Orchestral music (Mahler, Strauss, Shostokovich, etc.) tend to test the instrument to it's extreme. Like the piccolo, the Eb can't hide and your colleagues will appreciate not having to struggle to meet your pitch. (As we all know, when it comes to pitch, he who is loudest wins).
I've found the Buffet R13s play very well in tune compared to the top Leblancs. I have not tried the Selmers (Paris).
