I bought 5 old books on ebay, they're very interesting. One is Clarinet Cadenzas by Langenus, DeCaprio Method, Baermann's Clarinet studies No. 3, 30 caprices by Cavallini, and book 1 of Lazarus (which I thought was the full book, but is only bk 1). Anyway, they are nice and oooolllddd... 1910, 1917...
On one of the books, I found "Property of Otto Meyer." Does that sound familiar to anyone? Maybe he's famous!
Sooo... what do ppl do with old books? Outside of sell them on ebay? :P Should I be a collector of old books? Or should I donate them to the library? (The good old ICA collection and special collections where I work.) I wonder what you would do.

Yes, Otto was the brother of Oscar Meyer but was banned from the sausage factory because he couldn't read the scales properly. You will find that the library might not want your old books....that was my experience.

I'd keep them unless you already have another copy in better condition. I have an old Cavallini Caprices book, and I use it today for my lesson work. Donate it to the library for some lucky clarinetist to find! That's how I got my Cavallini, Lazarus, Langenus, Rose, and Klose.

CG,
I have picked up some real treasures on eBay and my advice is to save any that you do not want to trade with other players. Maybe for their duplicates (like I must have 2 or 3 copies or the Weber and Mozart and need the Cavallinni).
Build yourself a little stockpile and either resell on eBay or save. I have a cabinet of stuff that I got a music store sellouts that I am saving for a rainy day - sorry, no Kaspars but some pretty good accessories for later.
To barter stuff is a lot of fun and often a good deal for everyone. I recently traded a tarnished NOS ligature for a MP and some reeds.

C G - What you have seems to be highly specialized , to cl students only, so selling/giving-away is often difficult. For many years, I have worked in our public library's bookstore, run by we Friends of the Library [once a week], profits going directly to the lib., several thou. $ per year, much appreciated !! We accept nearly everything, have a shot of selling it for 10 c to 2-3 $, give away non-sellers to small libraries, helping groups [Salv. Army], prisons, etc. We solicit estate, moving, auction disposals, and among a lot of books, have found a few rare ones worth good money !! We often get old sheet [etc] music items, true, they dont sell well, Ive taken a few and given quite a few things to church musicians, believe they are appreciated [or trashed]. We sell old 33 records for 50 c, Ive found some goodies! So, contact your local libraries, they might be able to find a home for yours, possibly for income to a worthy cause. Luck, Don
Thanx, Mark, Don
