 Chadash Bb / A - difference?
Author: LeWhite

Hey guys,
I purchased a 65mm Chadash barrell which is maked 'A', meaning it's for A clarinet. There was also a 66mm 'Bb' which I would buy except that I needed a 65, so they said they'd shave it down for me.
Anyway, it's been over a week and I haven't heard from them, and the 'A' barrell works great on both my Bb and A, and I was wondering if I really do need to purchase the Bb one.
What do you all think?

I mean the theory is that if it works and it sounds good, then there's no problem right?

Thanks everyone.

Some say that they use the same barrel on both. It has the advantage that the barrel is always warm. The problem is that the bore of the two instruments is different and the corresponding barrels as well. Generally, I have found that there is an improvement in tuning, tone and response using the correct barrel. But, us they say, your mileage may vary.

There is a problem if they modify the barrel and you then decide that you don't want it.
IMO you should call "them" ASAP and tell them to delay the work until you have made a firm decision.

My clarinet teacher used his Chadash barrel on both his instruments and I was shocked. He said you go by how it sounds and whether or not the instrument is in tune. If you feel the A barrel on the Bb clarinet makes the Bb stuffy--don't use it. If it makes it better--use it.

"they said they would shave it down" a joke, right? they are seriously not going to take off the ring, shorten the exterior dimension and then re bore the socket.... that would be about as time consuming as, well, making another barrel, wouldn't it? (i'm pretty sure that they make the Chadash barrels from Buffet "barrel blanks"... but not certain)
meanwhile
i played for many years using the same barrels on both instruments. When i ended up with a "mixed pair" i found my Moenig B flat barrel worked very nicely on my A clarinet. More reccently, i started to use a Chadash barrel on my A clarinet (and the old Moenig on my B flat) and found the tone and intonation greatly improved.
swapping from the mouthpiece involves using a ligature that will not slip when you are changing instruments, something that deterred me from experimenting with this sooner. Oddly enough, i now find my instruments better matched and reed selection easier performances (as i'm now getting less variation in response etc between the two).

No seriously they'ye shaving a 66 into a 65! Here in Australia there's no guarantee of 'It's ok that this stores doesn't have any 65's, I'll just look elsewhere'. Becuase there are only like 3 stores in the whle country who actually stock Chadash barrels and I got the last 2.

The A barrel is working fine in all aspects on my Bb and has improved just about everything about my playing!
