This season the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra is going to play Der Rosenkavalier. What's a good recording of Der Rosenkavalier? I would like to get a recording before I start playing in the orchestra so I know what it sounds like.

Best regards,

The whole opera, or one of several "suite" arrangements [by R S himself or others]. ? A good friend, 1st chair cl in the Tallahassee Winds, sent me a CD which included an arr. of a suite for concert band [VG!]. Our Tulsa Band director was much impressed also, and asked me to "run down" the [out of print] Calliet arr. for band, which Ken K helped us find. We rehearsed it for some months, played it in a concert quite well [it is TOUGH] to our and the audience's enjoyment. Such beautiful music ! and a great story, read about it ! Don
Thanx, Mark, Don

I'm not really sure if I'm doing the whole opera or just a suite. Probably the whole opera.

I played this piece a few years back in youth orchestra its fun. The Philly orchestra under ormandy has a recording of this piece. The clarinet isn't the greatest but the orchestra as a whole does a great job.

I'd be surprised if you're doing the whole thing, but if you are ... get ready for a hard workout ... Strauss' writting is very, very demanding. The clarinet section is big (if you're doing the whole thing) including basset clarinet.
As to recordings, those done with the Vienna Philharmonic and there's quite a few, just about as perfect as you can get. The Karl Boehm is my favourite. Also Dover Editions now publish a full score (study size) of this amazing opera.
Kalmus' catalogue says it's scored for:
3d1, 3d1, 3+1+Eb, 3d1 - 4, 3, 3, 1, timp, perc, 2hp, cel, str (2.2.1.1.1), mx chor, offstage: 2, 1, 3, 2 - 2, 1, 0, 0, perc, harm, pf, str
But I'm sure there's a prominant part for basset clarinet ... I'll check my sull score when I get home.
Without music, the world would be grey, very grey.

I just got an email from the conductor and I'm not playing the entire Der Rosenkavalier. Just the Der Rosenkavalier Suite. I guess the suite is just highlights from the opera. Thank God it's not the entire thing.

Favorite quote from derR: "The majority of things in the world are such that you wouldn't believe them if told about them....." or words to that effect

The finest recording of all time is Philharmonia with Herbert von Karajan...wonderful pacing and it is available on emi records!
Check the beauty of phrasing from Bernard Walton!

Surely one must include the baton of Fritz Reiner. If I recall without my record collection in front of me, he did the Waltzes with the Met, and of course with the Chicago Symphony in the late 1950's on RCA. Much of the CSO catalog has come back into print on RCA Living Stereo discs, so you should be able to buy it or check it out of the library.
