How does one make the decision whether to audition (or even send in an application) for an orchestra job when one hasn't performed orchestrally since college (14 years ago)?
Yes, this is my situation. I have been playing steadily for the last 10 years, just not classical music. As many of you may know, I play primarily Balkan folk music, and have begun playing classical chamber music again (the last year or so). I recently bought an eefer and have the (misguided???) idea to audition for the Minnesota Orchestra this fall. My educational background is solid: BMus from Oberlin, MMus from Northwestern.
Would any of you more experienced auditioners recommend my auditioning for an orchestra? What would I learn musically and/or psychologically? Of course, I'm not expecting to get the job!
I guess I'm not looking for anything specific, just general lessons learned during the audition process or any lessons any of you learned when auditioning for a job you had no chance of getting.
Thanks,
Katrina

I try to play for as many people as I can, mostly professionals/ teachers. That way they can either help you improve certain spots or completely shoot you down. :P
I think if you feel that you can get through the audition, do it! If there's nothing to lose, then you have everything to gain! hehe
Good luck,

Your attitude reminds me of mine many, many moons ago, Kat. I always tried to go in as relaxed as possible because I figured I'd either make it or I wouldn't and I wouldn't die as a result of whichever it truned out to be.
I won a few, lost a few and learned a thing or two. Play what they ask you to play, smile often and never appear surprised.
Like any job interview, you come away knowing all the right things you did wrong and, sure enough, you'll soon find out whether they were having a good day or not too.
Whatta y' got t' lose?
