I am about to move to Boston to go to school, and I need to find a repairman in that area. If you know of anyone, please let me know. I am not looking for someone who can do run-of-the-mill pad and cork repairs but rather someone very experienced and knowledgeable who can do a complete overhaul of my instrument. I have already been informed of someone in Philadelphia, but was hoping to be able to find someone a little bit closer to the Boston area. Thanks, Amy.

Emilio Lyons at Rayburn's gets my vote for a downtown Boston woodwind tech. He set up my Buffet R-13 A magnificently.

If you're willing to drive an hour west, Mike Leonard at Leonard Music does fine work. He recently overhauled my R-13 Bb and did a great job.

When I was in Boston, most of the top woodwind players I knew didn't like anyone in Boston for repairs. They went to NY or Phily instead.

But don't expect anything quickly from Rayburn's right now--they're closing to move very shortly, if they haven't already. Will open again soon, but meanwhile it sounded like things were going to be on hiatus for a bit.

I've had good work done by Emilio, but Albert is my favorite. He's down in Needham, it's a bit of a drive, but there is a commuter rail station nearby as well.

I went to school in Boston from 2000-2004. Take this advice:

rayburns - terribly overpriced and they treat students poorly!

Stay away from a certain repair tech who works cheap on Boylston St. near Berklee (I wont name names, but he's the only one)

Albert Alphin is good - and they have a good selection of equipment - but if you are from the Tri-state area there are much better techs in NYC. Go to Alphins if you have an emergency.

Music Espresso on Huntington Ave. - good for the NEC student, but Yesterdays (which i believe is now Cambridge Music) at the Porter Sq. T stop in Cambridge has the BEST selection of music - and is well priced.

As many clarinet students attend school in Boston - I was shocked that there were no reliable techs in the area. Boston is a hard city for clarinetists if you don't have a car. Most gigs, techs, etc. lie outside the boundaries of the T service.

 Good Luck!
