Not clarinet related, but it is about Szell/Cleveland.
Who is playing the famous French horn solo of Tchaik 5's second movement in the 1959 recording that is now out on Sony/CBS Great Performances?

There is now a fine Decca recording of Szell with Tchaikovsky 4 and the LSO>..apparently Szell was not happy with the recording but it turns out to be one of the all time finest versions of this piece.

So they say David. and I certainly agree. But then.....it takes a Russian orchestra to really play PIT. I'm under the impression that either this recording or Szell with another orch. was the one where the engineer said to Szell, "But maestro we'll break the equipment." To which Szell replied, "So, break the equipment." A few months ago I heard the Detroit with Jarvi do the 4th and I thought it was the best I'd ever heard.

Myron Bloom was a wonderful player! Check out the Szell recordings of Ravel's Pavane and Strauss' tone poems. Just fantastic playing!
I second Bob - the Russians do Tchaikovsky right - especially Mravinsky/Leningrad.

Not to take anything away from GBK's knowledge or Marcia's admiration of said guru, but I believe Myron Bloom was kinda the Marcellus of the horn, and recordings with his playing are as worshipped by hornists as we clarinet geeks worship anything with Marcellus. So in orchestral music circles, Myron Bloom certainly isn't an obscure figure.
But don't bank on my knowledge -- I know so little about the French horn that I'm not even sure where the reed goes...
